What is your "real life" job?
My husband and I have owned Hi Quality Bakery in Cannon Falls since 1992. As the owner, I wear "many hats" from decorating wedding cakes and doing payroll to cleaning the bathroom and washing the dishes. I most enjoy waiting on the customers. So many of them have become good friends over the years.
Why did you decide to participate in the 3-Day?
Our daughter Hollie walked with the DuBar Dolls last year. I was so moved at the capital at the closing ceremony. I mentioned I would like to participate - so here I am!
Do you have a connection to breast cancer?
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2007 after finding a lump. It wasn't until after I was diagnosed that I learned my grandmother had breast cancer 40 years earlier but she died within 2 years. Because of the size of my tumor, it was thought I would need both chemotherapy and radiation as my treatment. My physician chose to use a new test available to check the genetic probability of my cancer returning. Because of research dollars such as those raised by the 3-Day, my doctor had the information needed to determine I would need only radiation. For this I am grateful but there are many other cancer patients that additional research can help.
What are you most looking forward to in participating?
The new friendships both on our team and meeting other survivors and walkers during the 3-Day.
What will be your biggest challenge?
I am worried I will not have the stamina to fully participate.
What do you hope to gain in this experience?
I walk in gratitude for my continued good health. By joining together to raise money for research, my hope is to help other cancer patients as I have been helped.
